Every year, the World Food Organization hosts World Food Day. This year World Food Day is October 16th, 2015 and the theme is “Social Protection and Agriculture”.
The theme this year aims to emphasize that reducing hunger is a primary goal for social protection to ensure that every person has direct access to food or the means to buy food. Famers play an essential role to this goal by stimulating agricultural production that has the potential to solve food insecurity and nutrition problems. Therefore this year’s hash tag is #ToastAFarmer that is trying to acknowledge and thank all those hard working farmers that give us food to eat every single day.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, it estimates that there are 805 million hungry people in the world meaning they regularly do not have enough food or nutrients on a daily basis. An alarming 26% of children are stunted due to malnutrition. To put it in other terms, 2 billion people suffer from malnutrition. al fresco wants you to help us solve this problem!
On top of making more people aware of this large hunger problem, here are some other things you can do on World Food Day or any day for that matter:
- Spread the word on social media with hashtags (#ToastAFarmer, #WorldFoodDay and #StopHunger)
- Donate food, money or your time at your local food shelter
- Volunteer at a local family farm
- Plant seeds in your backyard and donate food
- Plant seeds at your local homeless shelter to have those in hunger plant the products that feed them
Hunger is a serious social problem and we need everyone’s help. There are billions of people not getting the nutrition they deserve. Let’s all try to do our part this World Food Day.
