5 Kitchen Hacks That Will Change the Way You Cook

We like cooking, but we love cooking with less mess, in less time, with more Instagram-worthy results. Save time and your sanity in the kitchen with these five hacks and our recipes developed with Minute® Rice for the ultimate time-to-taste ratio.

Hack #1:
Remove smells with stainless.

Love garlic? Us, too. You know what we don’t love? Chopping garlic. That smell…that smell! It seems to sink into every inch of your fingernails and all the hand-washing in the world can’t seem to get it out.

Well worry no more! Did you know that the compounds in stainless steel are natural odor removers? It’s true! If you’re still trying to get rid of that pesky odor several hand-showers later, turn off that faucet and rub a stainless steel utensil on the problem areas. The smell will be gone in no time!

Hack #2:
Never run out of fresh herbs

If you’re anything like us, you’ve probably thrown out countless packages of fresh (and expensive!) herbs that you bought for a recipe and never used again. No problem, just grab an ice tray. Wait, what? 

That’s right, chop up the rest of that bunch of parsley, cilantro, basil or rosemary, pop in ice cube trays and cover with olive oil for always-fresh frozen ‘herb cubes’. You can add these cubes to soups, stews, stir-fries, casseroles and more for that same super-fresh herb flavor.

Hack #3:
Speed-grill with skewers

Skewer together your favorite veggies and whole al fresco sausage on multiple skewers. Grill as one delicious, complicated unit, then cut apart for perfect individual skewers.

Hack #4:
Make basics in bulk

There may be no better way to save time (and money!) than by prepping meals at the beginning of your week. Take the effort out of packing lunch by taking an ‘assembly line’ approach.

Start the week by making a large batch of brown rice or your favorite grain, then add veggies, protein and low-fat dressing each day as the spirit moves you. You’ll thank yourself later for the extra time in the morning – and the extra bucks in your pocket!

Hack #5:
Zest up your boiling water

So you’ve made rice more times than you can remember. Pretty simple, right? Bring the water to a boil, cover and simmer. While instant rice can certainly speed up this process, if you’re catching our drift, cooking rice can be pretty boring. But not for long!

Did you know that you can spruce up your pot of boiling water by adding chicken or beef stock? This will inevitably add whole new depths of flavor to any rice. Coconut milk works just as well for an aromatic rice experience! We recommend using equal parts stock (or milk) and water so as to not over-infuse the rice. Lastly, don’t forget that when the water begins to boil, you can add lemon or lime zest for a mild citrus flavor.
